Junior Primary
This phase caters for pupils from Grades 0 to 3, and forms the formal, foundation of our schooling system.
The Grade 0 pupils start school at 08:00 and their day ends at 12:30. They do not participate in extra-curricular activities, and parents are encouraged to collect them by 13:00. Grade 0 follows the same curriculum as the rest of the phase, and is seen as the first year of the Foundation Phase.
The programme is Outcomes Based, with the main focus on school readiness. All activities revolve around setting basic skills in place for the more formal learning programme in later years. Gross- and fine-motor development, as well as perceptual skills, comprises the core of the school readiness programme. Music, Computer Literacy and Physical Education form an important part of the Grade 0 curriculum. Learning takes place in a relaxed, fun-filled environment, where the child is given time to discover and investigate his/her world. The learning-through-play approach is gradually formalised and becomes more structured so that towards the end of the year, pupils are prepared for the more formal programme in Grade 1.
Grade 1 – 3 pupils are exposed to more formal learning where problem solving forms a significant part of the curriculum. The Grade 1 to 3 school day starts at 07:30 and ends at 13:00. As in Grade 0, an Outcomes Based Curriculum (RNCS) is followed. There are three learning areas – Literacy, Numeracy and Life Skills. Music, Computer Literacy and Physical Education are included and are taught by specialists.
In covering the curriculum a concerted effort is made to incorporate methods of teaching which take into consideration the different learning styles as well as multiple intelligences. Classrooms are arranged to cater for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. Teaching sound moral values forms an important part of the curriculum. Wherever possible activities are child centred and pupils are encouraged to think critically and share responsibility in the learning process. Every effort is made to ensure that pupils are able to function as members of a team and that they have a sound foundation and academic background on which to build.
For those pupils who require additional assistance, learning support is available on the premises and comprises a Remedial Teacher, an Occupational- and a Speech Therapist.
Participation in extra-curricular activities is voluntary for this age group. Extra-curricular activities include sport as well as activities such as hobbies, cultural activities and crafts. Pupils who partake in extra-curricular activities end their day at 14:00.
Mondays are reserved for sport, Tuesdays for hobbies, art and crafts and on Thursdays pupils may choose between sport and hobbies, art and crafts. On Wednesdays and Fridays all pupils may go home at 13:00.
An Aftercare facility is available until 17:00. This comes at an extra cost and parents are charged monthly.
