At Mitchell House, the CAPS curriculum is followed in Literacy and Life Skills. The Singapore Mathematics curriculum is followed with Singapore Science included where relevant. ICT, Music and PE are offered by subject specialists. Pupils enter Grade 00 in the year in which they turn 5. In this grade pupils learn through play, in a safe and caring environment. The emphasis in the daily programme is on the emotional, physical and social development of the child ensuring that he or she is receptive to the more formal programme to follow.
The development of gross motor skills is considered to be of vital importance as good gross motor skills positively affects all areas of learning in later years. The teacher, besides having the requisite formal qualifications, is affectionate, calm and trustworthy, allowing pupils to blossom in a secure and loving environment.
In Grade 0 all activities revolve around setting basic skills in place for the more formal learning programme in later years. Learning takes place in a relaxed, fun-filled environment, where the child is given time to discover and investigate his/her world. The learning-through-play approach is gradually formalised and becomes more structured so that towards the end of the year, pupils are prepared for the more formal programme in Grade 1.
The Grade 0 pupils start school at 07:30 and their day ends at 13:00. They do not participate in extra-curricular activities, and parents are encouraged to collect them by 13:00. In covering the curriculum in Grades 1 - 3, a concerted effort is made to incorporate methods of teaching which take into consideration the different learning styles as well as multiple intelligences. Classrooms are arranged to cater for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. Teaching sound moral values forms an important part of the curriculum. Wherever possible activities are child centred and pupils are encouraged to think critically and share responsibility in the learning process. Every effort is made to ensure that pupils are able to function as members of a team and that they have a sound foundation and academic background on which to build.
For those pupils who require additional assistance, learning support is available on the premises and comprises a Remedial Teacher, an Occupational- and a Speech Therapist.
